AVG AntiVirus Problems

I have been noticing a lot of problems with AVG AntiVirus lately, even gotten a couple of calls about it. The problem is that AVG is showing that it can't update and on other occasions, that there are "No Active Components" running.
I suggested to a couple of people to try and uninstall AVG, then reinstall it, but the uninstall process fails when they try.
I looked into it and there are a couple of different solutions.
First, in Windows Vista, I have noticed that if the UAC (User Account Control) is turned on, that seems to be causing problems with AVG updating. Try turning off UAC (Go to Control Panel, User Accounts and click on Turn User Account Control on or off. Requires you to reboot to go into effect) to see if that might fix your problem.
And if that doesn't seem to work and you have tried uninstalling AVG and can't. Download AVG again from www.free.avg.com and try reinstalling it or a repair install. I have had success with that. AVG 9 is out now, so maybe they resolved the problem with the newer version.
Edit: Uninstall AVG and download Microsoft Security Essentials.

I have the newest AVG and have had to use system restore twice. It took a virus into my machine that disabled my firewall and disconnected my internet. It also made my monitor window shudder.
I will go back to using AVG 8.
this has been a disaster!
I believe AVG is no longer Grisoft.
I had trouble with the latest pro version.
Eventually un-insttalled it and downloaded the Microsoft Security System.
It is great, does not slow down the system, updates itself in the background and it's FREE.
Who said Microsoft was rubbish? Who else provides the free stuff that they do?
I have used Grisoft and then AVG from the start. This year in June I started having problems with AVG in updates which were huge.
I tired 3 times in the update to the new 8 version in August and it refused to install.
I finally tried the new release then of 9 and it installed.
Then oddly it started updating the "program" and not just the virus files.
Putting up with 1 to 3 meg updates, I held my breath, and then at the end of December 2009, it just shut off my email scan.
It then said I needed like a 52 meg update which I did, and it refused to install.
It eventually all shut down in it wouldn't even scan like older versions.
So I re installed it all from a main file, and all worked well with a 2 meg update. Next day it was all Yield flag again and shut down.
This time it said I had to install a 72 meg program file update and 50 meg file for virus. Goodness, over 120 megs for a program that was around 60 megs.
I deleted the thing in disgust and downloaded Avira which is 30 megs and while it did after a first scan take forever to load a browser page, I just rebooted and it has been running well ever since.
Why these companies can't figure out that small programs are better downloads is beyond reasoning.
I will never use AVG again as they wasted around 50 hours of my time which I should sue them for in their incompetence.
Avira has no email scan that I can see, but when one has free and it at least works, I am not going to complain.
AVG simply sucks.
